Once upon a time....

Nancy Plays Nurse

Just two storybooks stand out in my memory from my early childhood. One is a Christmas book that I'll save for a Dec. post & the other (above) ..... when I managed to find a picture of the cover (which is actually what I remember most about it), it felt like I was meeting a long lost friend for the first time in a very long time :)

I've wanted to be a nurse since I was a little girl. Despite a few places in my story where the plot thickened a bit too much for my liking....I am living my dream(fairytale!) come true. There isn't much that I want, that I don't have - tho' there are still things I haven't done that I'd like to do...

Long story short, I grew up in a neighborhood w/ mostly boys. Played army a lot. Was always the nurse. Often got a new nurse kit for Christmas. My patients loved my candy pills! - So much so that I think they enjoyed getting "wounded" just so they could have some! :) We played G.I. Joes too & my Barbie was the nurse then too! And I was a candystriper in high school. I married my best friend smack out of highschool & we had our first baby when I was nineteen. Now, after 4 children (one in heaven), I've spent a lot of time in doctors offices, urgent care centers & emergency rooms for things such as well baby check-ups, ear infections, stitches, etc - but - I never did become a nurse. Maybe it's best - bc judging by how I react at times when my own children are sick or hurt, I'm not so sure I'd make a very good nurse anyhow! It's like I feel their pain!

Playmaker (my oldest daughter - Sophomore) is leaning toward being a nurse too & I've seriously considered taking the nursing program at the local state college along w/ her - as they have an excellent program - but I'm not sure we'd be able to swing it financially after we will have just finished putting our son thru' college & will likely have one more to go.

Time will tell if I ever become a nurse - or not .... but I can't help but wonder if this book is what inspired me to want to be one in the first place - once upon a time...

P.S. How I wish now that I had saved this book then!

Thank you for sharing this wonderful story! It would be neat if your daughter does decide to become a nurse.

And you know the saying - "It's never too late to become what you might have been." :)

Best wishes!

What a beautiful story. You should take out a loan for your education and become a nurse! It could be such a great ministry... and soon to have an empty nest so young, WHY NOT???

Thanks for the encouragement! I'm just grateful that it is even something I can consider at this point....one advantage of having kids young :)

I guess what they say that what we read as kids is part of who we are is true. Follow your dream however you can.

I, too, always wanted to become a nurse and was a candystriper in high school (I LOVED it!)....but never did...although, as you say, had to sort of be one with my own children.
I ended up becoming a teacher (which is much more my forte', I think). But...I still think about the nursing bit and wonder if I should try it now at the ripe old age of....gulp!...53?

Personally, I think YOU should "go for it"! You could take one or 2 classes at a time....(You're going to be quite a busy woman having your little (was it a coffee shop/bookstore?) and becoming a nurse!)

4 Bushel Farmgal and Lupines both made good points...."It's never too late...", and It could be an excellent ministry!

As for me? Well, teaching in itself is a ministry, so I may stick with it while I continue to ponder the "nursing notion" in the back of my head for a while longer.

P.S. Loved your "life story":)

I never grew up knowing I wanted to be a nurse, but can't imagine doing anything else after 26 years! Go for it! Two years... a very small amount of time to devote. The rewards are priceless. :c)

Thanks for visiting my Journey Through Grace and for your kind words. You have a very lovely blog.

Well, I thought about this blog today....My mother (who is 72-ish lives alone out in the countryin a big ol' antebellum home....Anyway, she called bright and early this morning....Bless her heart, she had been up all night with an upset stomach and was feeling extremely weak & faint. I stayed the day with her (I have another sister who will spend the night). Anyway, after i had been there several hours, Mama weakly said, "you're a good nurse." :)

Hi Mug. Funny - I was just telling my husband that so much of why I want to be a nurse doesn't require a license...the way you've been caring for your mom is a good example/illustration of what I was trying to say.

I hope your mom is better soon.
