I love saturdays

I love Saturdays. Slept in today &  it's been snowing this morning. My house smells like bacon. I'm making Boston Baked Beans in the crockpot & planning to make brown bread later. I've never made it.  Did you know it is actually steamed - not baked?  My husband's out getting the oil changed in his car & he saved me a trip to the grocery store too. Playmaker went over to her boyfriend's family's house to make crepes for breakfast. Spokes is comin' home later today. Strike is getting ready to go pitch to her dad in a nearby school gym.  I'm a bit anxious to finish up a few things that need to be done so I can just do what I want to do....that being nothing much at all really ....to sit by the window under a blanket by the fire w/ a cuppa hot tea & peruse a couple magazines...maybe read a chapter of my book. Probably sounds boring to most. But there's really no place I'd rather be at the moment.

Hope you're enjoying the moment - wherever you are - as much as I am.

Alzheimers - A new TREATment approach

If given a choice of prescriptions - say between chocolate and Xanac - which would YOU prefer?

Giving a child pretty much everything they want whenever they want is obviously not a good thing - but - when one is old & suffering from Alzheimers/Dimentia perhaps it IS! If you know someone who has Alzheimers/Dimentia, below is a link to a must read. I wish I had read something to this effect when my mom was still alive as it offers a new/different/thoughtful & creative approach to treatment - one with more personal freedom & dignity at the heart of it as opposed to more conventional treatments that too often boil down to... captivity, if you ask me.

Red Neck Fire Alarm

Now that's funny, I don't care who you are!!!!

You never have to change the batteries!
I'm putting one in every room!
Safety First!

You don't have to thank me for this information; I do this as a public service.

Post Script: LOL. This found its way to me via e-mail from a friend a few weeks ago. We spent New Years Eve w/ them at the home of other friends we have in common who had received the email too - & they made sure to have one hanging from their kitchen cabinet door...for safety's sake, I'm sure ;)

A timely story

Finished this book yesterday. A timely read  - for me  - considering that "time" has been on my mind. Been thinkin' about how there never seems to be enough time. How time is a non-renewable resource - & you never know how much time you have left. Been thinkin' too about how best to use my time & how VeRy much time is required to develop & grow relationships...the very things I believe we were designed & created for - tho' too often it's easier to just avoid them because in no time at all they can get so ... complicated.

There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:

Ecclesiastes 3:1

True to tradition, my book group that began by reading the first book in this series, begins each new year by reading the next book in the series. The first book inspired the name of my blog. And I read the first part of this ongoing story for the first time soon after I'd endured the most incredibly difficult circumstances of my life & was inspired by something in the story to look up the meaning of my name.  My mom said she named me Joyce bc of the joy she felt when I was born but when I looked it up I was stunned then to learn that my name means "experienced in battle" and to learn it only once it fit like a glove.  I found some comfort in my name then too as I considered that the "battle" of my personal lifetime to that point ( & still to this day) - had served a purpose & "in the end" I was stronger, better & more of who God intended me to be from the start.

God said to him, “Your name is Jacob, but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel. ” So he named him Israel.

Fast Forward to now. The women in this story are characters(!) - who are more like good friends after all these years :) And the characters in this story are women (for the most part)...a diverse group of women who were randomly placed in the same prayer group at a Christian women's conference. Over time & thru' various circumstances, they set aside/overcome typically divisive differences (age, race, culture, marital & economic status, etc.) & become good friends who are intimately involved in each others lives & families.  This book/Book #5 reveals that the main character's (who could easily be me - tho' that's not necessarily always a good thing) middle name is Marie. Any idea what it means?  Rebellious. And would you believe that's my middle name too?! And this is the first I've heard of its meaning - tho' yet again, it fits! This time much better than I care to admit. Yet even as I was convicted about the negative effects  (& there are many) of rebelliousness (is that a word?!), I was encouraged too as I read this story & considered ways God might actually use my character flaw for good - as only He can do. Imagine that.  When I look at it that way it seems as if I'm one big rebellious bundle of potential! ;)

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

As I came to the end I wasn't ready for it to end. But patience walks hand in hand with time and the LORD knows I need more patience ... soooo - I'll wait - staying true to tradition until about this time a year from now to read more of the story. In the meantime, I think I'll set aside some differences I have with others because - well - because ... it's about time. And there never seems to be enough of it. And you never know how much you have left.  And .....

The end of a matter is better than its beginning,
and patience is better than pride.

Happy New Year!

Seems like only yesterday that I was celebrating New Years Eve & pondering resolutions. Well - it was only yesterday -  but you know what I mean ;)  Where does the time go?!

Christmas was fun!  Loved havin' our whole family all together for a few days. My husband has had the whole week off & we really didn't have much of anything planned & we haven't had to do much of anything that we normally do -  so it's been really nice. Low key.  Just been comin' & goin' as we please. Restful.  Had a big snow & windstorm right after Christmas. Hunkered down & enjoyed it from the inside out. Sat by the fire a lot. Read whenever I felt like it. Had a house full of kids over for fun & games one day. That certainly livened things up & we enjoyed their company.

We welcomed in the new year  w/ friends, food & fun.  I tried out a new recipe....Baked Brie encrusted in phyllo dough & topped w/ apricot preserves. Served it w/ sliced apples, grapes & crackers. Definitely worth making again & so simple. Slept in late this morning. Watched the Rose Bowl Parade. Went for a hike in the snow with my husband & the girls.  If ever I was a treehugger, it was today!  The trail was slick but we had a lot of fun. The weather was  beautiful. I overdressed & worked up a sweat but it felt so good to get outdoors & to get some exercise & fresh air.  Just finished a book too.  Perhaps more on that later.  My husband's cookin' dinner. It's not even 6:00pm & I'm goin' to put on my pjs & enjoy a quiet evening at home as I ease into this new year.

Happy New Year!

You shall go out with joy & be led forth in peace;

Nightlights

...from around our town & neighborhood.

The Common

Something rather uncommon to find on a common these days.
I look for it every year :)

pub window

Another "common perspective"...
That boy statue looks frozen solid.
Every now & then someone has compassion & gives him a new coat ;)

 antique store window

 Our neighbor's window

"Funny" story. We've lived here about 10 yrs. - don't really even know this neighbor & his wife tho' who live just a few houses down & across the street.  They're an elderly couple. We're really friendly but not really friends. Anyhow -  yesterday he was in line behind me at the grocery store & I wasn't sure he'd recognize me out of context but we chatted a bit & I told him how pretty his front window looked & that I'd actually photographed it the night before - & it seems that compliment was the "ticket" for admission into their home...the key to their front door so to speak :)  He invited us in anytime to see it from the inside out! Apparently he & his wife have been collecting carolers over the years & each year they display their ever increasingly large collection beautifully in their front window. We'll probably stop over sometime very soon. I'm looking forward to getting to know he & his wife better after all these years!

Our next door neighbor's front yard

 a beautiful "bokeh" of lights!

I did it!  This is basically the same pic as the one above but out of focus. This is an actual photography technique...& it's called "bokeh".   I'd love to be able to claim that I've mastered it! --- but in all honesty, I captured this effect quite by accident.
